The only goal of an ageing Asian-American widow is to see her son and rebellious daughter (described as an American Born Confused Deshi or ABCD) married off to respectable Indian families.
The Varanasi Silk Saris have been an emblem of Indian Culture since ancient times. These beautiful saris woven using handlooms have intricrate designs and patterns made sometimes from gold and silver. Over the years, the demand for these saris which have been the most coveted bridal wear amongst both Hindus and Muslims brides, has reduced.
To make matters worse, Chinese "fakes" made on powerlooms are now available. Exploitation by middlemen and these factors have led to a major decline in the industry. There are approximately 500,000 silk weavers in Varanasi. 60 % of the handlooms are closed. Due to lack of work, many highly skilled weavers have chagned professions. There is starvation and malnutrition. There have been several deaths and suicides reported.
This is an issue of poverty, child labor, human rights, unfair trade, intellectual property, threat to cultural heritage. One of the main reasons is unchecked and insensitive globalization.
This is a video report highlighting this issue. Made by PVCHR ( People's vigillance committee on human rights - a human rights organization working in Varanasi) and (AHRC) Asian Human, Rights Commission, it features the report by Paul Mason of BBC.

Sangeeth Sivan this movie is just beyond praise(laughs sarcastically)..too...goood..GOD knows what inspires director for such an atrocious drivel..WOW superb...awe inspiring...i and only i know how i frittered away my money on such an odd sickening flick..how money become the sole ambition for every characters has been shown trillion and trillion times on silver screen but yet if someone really wanna do something similar again Arrey Yaar then do that with absolute sole and heart.The screenplay at some frame of time becomes sloppy and one thinks so sorry for the director and Afcose for an audience its very aggravating.Phir Hera Pheri,Hera Pheri,Malamaal Weekly,etc had the same leitmotiv but to every frame was better than this flick. If a good discussion requires some positive point then the positive point about the movie lies in the fact that all the female cast were eye popping.wow...OK Riteish was dandy,fine..ya Jackie looks good in his big cameo..and few laughs from our bobby darling was digested well..what good things could i speak of..Haan the climax is well knitted and how the whole chaos aggravate their plans is too hilarious...rest every thing same old.old wine in an old bottle only...
